Formed in Sydney, Australia in 1973, AC/DC went on to become one of the most successful rock bands of all time.
Lead by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, AC/DC combined rock n roll, hard rock and blues rock into a high voltage, raucous mix, which saw the band sell more than 200 million records worldwide over the span of their four decade career.
History of AC/DC
Malcolm and Angus Young were born in Glasgow before their family emigrated to Australia in 1963. Inspired by their older brother, George, who was a member of The Easybeats, a successful Australian skiffle band, Malcolm and Angus began to play guitar and founded AC/DC in the early 70s.
The idea for the name was inspired by their sister’s sewing machine, which had the initials “AC DC” on the side – an abbreviation of “alternating current/direct current” electricity. The brothers felt this perfectly captured the band’s raw power and energy.
The band saw some initial success with the original line up of vocalist Dave Evans, bassist Larry Van Kriedt and drummer Colin Burgess.
However, with the recruitment of Bon Scott as vocalist in 1974, the band’s profile quickly rose in Australia. By 1976 the band saw international success with the release of their first album “High Voltage” – a compilation of songs from their previous two releases.
The band’s biggest breakthrough came just 3 years later with the release of “Highway to Hell”, which peaked at number 17 in the US album charts.
Death of Bon Scott & Recruitment of Brian Johnson
Tragedy hit in AC/DC on the 19th February 1980, when vocalist Bon Scott died after a night out with a friend.
Although the band considered quitting without their frontman, Bon Scott’s parents encouraged them to continue. After a short round of auditions the band discovered former Georgie frontman Brian Johnson.
With Johnson the band saw even greater success after the release of “Back in Black”. Released in July 1980, Back in Black went on to become one of the greatest selling albums of all time.
Follow up albums “For Those About to Rock” and “Flick of the Switch” further solidified AC/DC as one of the most popular rock acts of the 1980s.
They continue to tour and work on new music even after the departure of founding member and rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young & long time vocalist Brian Johnson in 2017.
